Ovals have become more popular over the last couple of years. They are a great alternative to the round cut offering a larger face up appearance which gives more finger coverage. It’s also brilliant cut like the round so you get a good amount of sparkle. The ratio of a stone is the comparison of the length and width of the diamond. Length to width ratio is so crucial when choosing an oval as this will determine the actual shape of your oval - if it will be more spready or elongated. Clients tend to like the more elongated ovals because it gives more finger coverage. The most popular ratio for an oval is 1.3-1.5.
Interestingly with an oval the carat weight doesn’t tell how big it will appear. Again, the ratio will determine that and a 1.4 is your most popular ideal ratio. It’s a little spready and a little elongated perfect proportions.
When it comes to ovals I say color over clarity. For color, I color and above. I try to choose stones that that don’t have any yellow or brown tints. As for clarity, SI2 or better but you always want to see in person and not just based on the certificate. That way you can see the imperfections in person with the naked eye and decide if you can live with those.
Lastly, how noticeable is the bow tie effect. Ovals have a distinct feature called a bow tie affect which is a dark span of light across the middle of the stone. This is not a desirable feature. A good oval should have a bright string of reflection across the middle of the stone so keep this in mind when choosing your stone.
